Drainage Issue For Croydon Housing Estate

We were contacted by a long-standing client within the construction and refurbishment sector, who regularly manages works on behalf of local Councils and housing associations, to investigate ongoing surface water drainage issues at a large residential housing estate in Croydon.

Residents and site managers had raised concerns about slow-draining groundwater and standing surface water, which regularly built up along walkways and communal areas. After periods of heavy rain, large puddles would form and fail to drain away. During the colder winter months, this water would freeze, turning the paths into extremely slippery surfaces and creating a serious slip and trip hazard for residents, visitors and council maintenance teams.

Our drainage engineers attended site to carry out a full inspection and assessment of the existing drainage layout. We identified that the area lacked adequate surface water drainage to cope with rainfall, particularly across such a large open space. To provide a long-lasting and practical solution, we recommended the installation of ACO channel drains, which are designed to collect surface water quickly and safely redirect it away from walkways.

Drainage Issue For Croydon Housing Estate

Due to the size of the housing estate, the solution required the installation of approximately 150 metres of ACO channel drainage. The channels were carefully installed at the correct levels to ensure water flows efficiently into the drainage system, preventing it from pooling on the surface.

Once the works were completed, the improvement was immediate. Rainwater now drains away effectively, even during heavy rainfall, and there is no longer standing water left on the paths. Most importantly, the walkways are now safe to use all year round, including during freezing winter conditions.

Thanks to these professional drainage works for Croydon Council, the housing estate is no longer a health and safety risk, and residents can use the communal walkways with confidence.

This example of drain repairs in London demonstrates our experience in Council drainage works, surface water drainage solutions, and flood prevention for residential housing estates in Croydon and South London.
