We were recently contacted by a homeowner in Egham, TW20, who had been suffering from persistent and recurring drain blockages. As many homeowners do, she initially tried a range of DIY solutions commonly recommended online, including drain chemicals and household remedies. Unfortunately, none of these provided a lasting solution.

She then instructed another contractor to attend the property to carry out high-pressure water jetting, which initially appeared to resolve the issue. However, less than 24 hours later, the same blockage returned. Despite contacting the contractor she had already paid, she received no response regarding further investigation or next steps, leaving her understandably frustrated and still dealing with an ongoing drainage problem.

When the client contacted us, we explained that recurring drain blockages are almost always a symptom of an underlying defect within the drainage system. We recommended attending site with a high-pressure water jetting unit, fully equipped to also carry out our Core CCTV Drain Camera Inspection Package during the same visit.

Once the blockage was cleared and the drains were flowing, our engineers completed a CCTV drainage survey, allowing us to assess the condition of the pipework and identify the root cause of the repeated failures.

Roots found in London drains

The CCTV inspection revealed severe root ingress throughout the drainage system, with roots penetrating fractured pipework and displaced joints. In the most severely affected area, our engineers also identified evidence of structural movement within the

building walls, which could have been caused by the water leaving the drainage system.

Due to the severity of the defects, it was clear that remedial works needed to be carried out promptly. Unfortunately, the level of repair required was more extensive and costly than the client had anticipated, and involved a combination of:

  • Targeted excavations at the most affected sections

  • Root removal using Picote milling machinery

  • Installation of structural soft felt liners and structural patch liners to seal the pipework to a watertight condition

As with many drainage issues, the cost was unexpected. With Christmas only a couple of weeks away, this placed the client in a very difficult position — a situation many homeowners can relate to when hidden drainage defects come to light.

Thankfully, we had recently begun offering Klarna payment options, which made a significant difference in this case. Being able to spread the cost of the works meant the client could proceed without the added stress of a large upfront payment during an already challenging time of year.

This allowed us to commence the works within just a couple of days of identifying the cause of the problem, ensuring the drainage system was repaired and fully operational before Christmas. Most importantly, the client no longer had to worry about toilets backing up or overflowing over the festive period.

All structural lining works carried out as part of this project were completed to a watertight condition and are backed by our 15-year guarantee against faulty materials and poor workmanship. This provides long-term reassurance that the repairs have been carried out to a high standard using industry-approved methods and materials.

This project highlights why CCTV drain inspections are essential when blockages keep returning. Clearing a drain treats the symptom — but a camera inspection identifies the cause, allowing repairs to be accurately targeted and unnecessary repeat costs avoided.

If you’re experiencing recurring drain blockages in Egham or the wider TW20 or Surrey area, an early CCTV drainage survey could save you significant time, money, and disruption.
