Usually, we find that customers are regularly told that a leaking drain requires a full excavation and renewal to repair either a whole drainage run or a localised area. Drainage is often affected by tree roots and their growth coming into contact with pipework. This can cause intermittent blockages that are usually expensive to clear, can cause a lot of inconvenience and also are hazardous to health.

Unfortunately, the cost of any excavation and drainage repair can be expensive and these processes aren’t usually covered by buildings insurance. WHAT IS STRUCTURAL SOFT FELT LINING.

There is other processes that don’t require a full excavation, such as structural soft felt lining. This method the installation of a new sleeve which fits inside the original damaged drain. The original pipe then becomes a host pipe to the liner. Before the liner is introduced into the drain, it is permeated with a resin. The resin is mixed together with a catalyst and an accelerator, which causes the liner to harden. Finally, a compressed air machine inflates the liner. This makes the liner expand to the shape of the host pipe, sealing it to a watertight condition.

When the liner has cured, it’s left in immediate working order. Long lengths can be completed in a single installation, and we have event installed liners of 100m+. These have been fitted on numerous occasions, and each one was completed within a day. When this method is compared against the traditional method of excavation, it’s clear to see the massive savings are made. These savings aren’t only in terms of cost, but disruption and inconvenience are kept to a minimum.

​

The benefits of structural soft felt lining don’t end with costs and time saving. It also provides many other features which include: improved flow and a section that doesn’t incorporate joints. This means the pipe has no weak spots, and therefore gives a long lasting solution. A typical liner is 3mm thick, so the cross section of the drain is minimal. This is much less than a joint which is slightly misaligned, which are common in the earthenware pipework.

All drain problems can develop and their condition can deteriorate, which is why we advise to call an experienced drain engineer at the point of you discovering a drainage issue. Some drain problems eventually get to the point that water loss can wash away the bedding material that is located below the foundations, and this creates voids. This will eventually lead to movement of the building, which will cause cracking of the walls and many further problems. The costs to cover these further problems would be extremely expensive and underpinning will be required. Even if the building’s insurance covers the cost of the underpinning, a record of the occurrence is kept and re-insuring can be both difficult and expensive.

Once the structural soft felt lining is installed, it’s covered against faulty workmanship and materials by our 15 year guarantee. Manufacturers however, say that the life expectancy is at least 50 years.
