CCTV Drain Survey Saves Lewisham School Unnecessary Costs

We were contacted by the caretaker of a school in Sydenham (SE26) who was seeking a second opinion on drainage repair works that had been recommended by another contractor. He had been advised that the drainage system required 52 structural patch liners, with multiple patches proposed within several individual pipe runs.

Due to the scale of the recommendation and the associated costs, we were asked to carry out our own CCTV drain survey to independently assess the condition of the drainage network.
Our survey showed that while there were defects present, most were spread along the pipe runs rather than being small, isolated problem areas. Because of this, we recommended using structural soft felt liners, which repair longer sections of pipe in one go.
Structural soft felt liners not only cover more pipework as they are cut to the required length but also provide a stronger and longer-lasting solution, and effectively future-proofs the drainage system — often at a lower overall cost. In contrast, patch liners (which most often come in 600mm or 1000mm lengths) are frequently chosen by contractors because they are quicker and easier to install and can be fitted by a single operative, but they are not always the most appropriate solution when defects are widespread.
Our findings and recommendations were passed on to Lewisham Council, who were pleased with the significant cost savings achieved by adopting a more suitable repair method. We have since been instructed to carry out the works during the next school holiday, ensuring minimal disruption to the school.
All structural lining works are backed by our 15-year guarantee against faulty materials and poor workmanship, giving the client long-term peace of mind.
This project highlights the importance of obtaining an independent CCTV drain survey and second opinion before committing to major drainage repairs — particularly for schools and public buildings, where long-term performance and value for money are essential.
